Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate) side effects

Sildenafil Citrate is a PDE5 inhibitor which increases blood flow to the penis with sexual arousal. 

The most common possible side effects of Sildenafil Citrate are headache, flushing or stuffy nose. 

Other less common temporary side effects are abnormal vision, back pain, muscle pain. (For most, side effects seem to vanish with continued use)  

Sildenafil Citrate (Viagra) is not for everyone. Is your heart healthy enough for you to have sexual activity. Do not take Sildenafil Citrate if your healthcare provider has advised you not to engage in sexual activity because of your health problems.

If unsure, ask your doctor. Particularly if you have or have ever had:

  • Heart problems such as a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, angina, chest pain etc. 
  • Have had heart surgery within the last 6 months. 
  • Have had a stroke. 
  • Have low or high blood pressure that is not controlled. 
  • Have had an erection that lasted for more than 4 hours. 
  • Have problems with your blood cells such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma or leukemia.

Do not take Sildenafil Citrate if you take any medicines called nitrates such as nitroglycerin often prescribed for chest pain or certain other medications that may be prescribed for pulmonary hypertension. If in doubt, consult a doctor for medical advice.

Do not take Sildenafil Citrate if you use recreational drugs called poppers such as amyl nitrite and butyl nitrite. Your blood pressure could drop to an unsafe level.

Priapism. An erection that will not go away is called a priapism. If you have an erection that lasts more than 4 hours, get medical help straight away.
